 THIS IS AKASHVANI

Akashvani  Bhavan is on Parliament Street, New Delhi. The nearest metro station is Patel Chowk, opposite the RBI and NITI Aayog buildings. The old building of Akashvani still stands and retains the aura of a bygone era, though a new broadcasting house has come up just behind the old structure.

Let's delve into the rich history of Akashvani. The journey of this broadcasting service began in India on 1st April 1930, initially as an experimental venture for two years. It then solidified its place in history, gaining permanent status in May 1932. Renamed All India Radio on 8th June 1936, the term' Akashvani' was first coined by the legendary poet Rabindranath Tagore in 1934. The poet Pandit Narendra Sharma's suggestion to change the name to Akashvani was implemented in 1957. Akashvani, meaning' Celestial announcement' or' Voice from the Sky', proudly upholds its motto: ' Bahujan Hitaya: Bahujan Sukhaya’.

Today, Akashvani stands tall as one of the largest broadcasting organisations in the world. Its channels like AIR FM Gold, AIR FM Rainbow, Vividh Bharati, Indraprastha channel, and The Farm and Home Service for farmers and rural people have garnered immense popularity. The newsrooms of Akashvani are a testament to its staff's dedication and hard work, as they tirelessly work to keep the nation informed. The dynamic atmosphere is filled with the youthful energy of young journalists fresh out of prestigious institutes, always ready to bring the latest news to the public.

As you step onto the third floor of the New Broadcasting House, the aroma of coffee fills the air, emanating from the coffee kiosk. Laughter, animated conversations, and the sound of colleagues catching up over steaming cups of coffee, tea, and snacks create a lively atmosphere. The other two canteens of Akashvani are also bustling with activity, adding to the vibrant charm of the campus.

The government electric cars that ferry the staff at odd hours are generally parked on the great open space outside. There is also provision for the parking of personal cars at the underground parking lot. The entire campus of Akashvani is manned by security personnel 24* 7. The staff here work round the clock 24*7 on a shift basis. The staff often utilise the vast campus for long walks.

The Rang Bhavan auditorium of Akashvani is always the centre of much excitement and flurry, as some event of great significance in the city is hosted here. The Directorate building is also a place of work for many staffers.

Many a curious soul lands here and try to decipher the magic of this place that is the source of endless infotainment, soulful music, news, and current affairs content. In the last few years, Akashvani has become synonymous with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Maan Ki Baat.
