 ENCOUNTER ON PARK STREET

 

Mark was awakened from his deep sleep by an eerie glow from his neighbour's window in the middle of the night. He approached the window carefully and heard a strange "whup whup" noise coming from inside, which grew louder with each step closer to the window. When he looked through the glass, he was taken aback by a scene from Steven Spielberg's sci-fi movie. Five green-skinned Martians were gathered in his neighbour's room, chatting away. Their skin was casting a bluish-green light across the room. To Mark's surprise, his neighbour was pointing towards him and drawing the attention of the Martians to him.

 

Mark was abruptly interrupted from his attempt to comprehend the bizarre scene by a tap on his shoulder. He turned around, only to find himself face to face with an otherworldly being. Its penetrating gaze seemed to penetrate his very being, leaving him momentarily paralysed as he grappled with the sheer surrealism of the situation.

 

“Human fear not,” the Martian said, its voice a metallic echo far beyond human comprehension. "We just need a host who will house us far from the chaos of our world.”

 

Mark’s initial apprehensions ceased, and they were replaced by curiosity and the audacity of the demands. Many questions were forming in his mind, but he could not articulate them then.

 

Mark was wracked with unbearable discomfort as the Martian signalled its companions, and they, one by one, invaded his human body. The six Martians, now his unwelcome guests, wreaked havoc inside him, causing his body to convulse in protest. Mark had no choice but to accept his new reality and was now a host to these six alien entities, with all their peculiarities and tantrums. In his silent vow, he promised himself that his neighbour would not escape his wrath for dragging him into this chaotic mess.

 

As the Martians made merry inside him, Mark heard the cosmos whispering, “This too shall pass.”

  CANNABIS MOB   A mob of cannabis peddlers and advocates is holding a meeting at the city’s Chinese eatery in downtown Chinatown. The air is thick with cannabis smoke as the mob members pass the  chillum  around. The waiter hurries along as he places plates of Manchurian, chilli-chicken, hakka noodles, steamed fish, fried rice, fresh from the chef’s stove, to their table. The mob members are seated huddled around. They have had a long and successful run in several cities in which they operated. Now they were in search of new territory to expand their business.   COSMOS NESTLES ALIEN PET FROM VENUS   The cockpit wheezed as Cosmos placed his frosty palms against the steel metal, pulse racing. Zeta, the grey alien’s fluorescent skin, glowed with a hallowed blue light, casting ominous shadows across the crowded shuttle cockpit compartment.
