NEW JALPAIGURI RAILWAY STATION

 NEW JALPAIGURI RAILWAY STATION

New Jalpaiguri railway station is bustling and full of life and activity. As you enter the station, loud announcements of inbound and outbound trains over the loudspeakers hit the ear drums. The people at the station move around noisily, speaking over the noise of the loudspeakers, their animated chatter occasionally drowned by the booming announcements. The rhythmic hum and whistles of the train engines add to the cacophony of the noises of this busy station.

Despite its modest size, New Jalpaiguri railway station is a living testament to the fusion of British colonial architecture and modern design. The overhead bridges, remnants of a bygone era, not only facilitate people's movement but also evoke a deep sense of appreciation for the station's rich nostalgia and heritage.

The even, smooth, warm concrete under your feet provides a comforting touch as you step onto the platform. The air is infused with the familiar scent of diesel oil, a hallmark of railway stations. The aroma of local food from nearby vendors- hot samosas, spicy aloo puri, sweet mango pickles, steaming hot tea and coffee, and traditional Bengali sweets- tantalise your taste buds. Then, brimming with various reading materials that cater to the intellectually curious, two book kiosks offer a feast for the mind.

The rainbow of colours at the station is a sight to behold. A mosaic of brightly coloured sarees and salwars, colourful turbans, shirts, and tees in different shades and colours dot the scene. Large digital boards hanging overhead display the time and train schedules in bright red messaging. The stationary maroon-coloured trains add to the lively scene, all a sight for the visual artist.

The platform seats feel strong, relaxed, and sturdy. The peak summer breeze carries the scent of incense sticks burning from a plate a young girl carries with a picture of Lord Krishna. The colossal baggage scanners at the entrance feel rigid and solid, and the metal rails on them feel cold.

As you sip the famous station tea, a mixture of warmth, spices, and condensed milk hits your taste palettes. As you savour the traditional sweets of North Bengal, their sweet, soft, milky taste tingles the mouth. Their lingering taste is a moment of indulgence amidst the whirlwind motion of the New Jalpaiguri Railway Station.
