THE ENDLESS ORDEAL: JAMES AND THE RUTHLESS JOB SELECTION PROCESS

THE ENDLESS ORDEAL: JAMES AND THE RUTHLESS JOB SELECTION PROCESS

Like any other youngster his age, James aspired to a secure, stable position as an analyst in a reputable firm. However, unlike any job selection process, this odyssey quickly became a hellish ordeal. What seemed routine suddenly morphed into a nightmarish experience fraught with arduous tests and never-ending trials.

James was asked to take a written exam. But to his dismay, it was no ordinary test. It was set at the level of a foreign secretary exam, requiring tremendous knowledge and analytical skills. This was just the beginning of his long ordeal.

After the written exam, he was subjected to severe mental and physical tests to judge his suitability. These tests were beyond what a mere analyst was expected to perform. He was pushed into situations designed to break him. A group of psychopaths was assigned the task of abusing and physically torturing him 24x7, nonstop. The torment was relentless, testing his patience and breaking point.

To James' horror, this selection process stretched to several years, and he had no respite. The promise of a secure, stable job remained elusive and out of his reach. He soon realised he was just a scapegoat being exploited royally. He was expected to be a firefighter and diplomat, servant, mediate conflicts, connect people, cook, provide fodder for political discourse, provide inputs so that the industry could run smoothly, and take the blame for anything going wrong at any time. His role was beyond that of a mere analyst. He was expected to act as a muse, advisor, and mentor, sacrifice his freedom and privacy, and be available 24x7, besides performing other menial tasks of a bodyguard, among others.

Despite enduring physical pain, abuse and humiliation daily, he received a pittance for his efforts. He never got any official position, rank, or award, leaving him in a perpetual hanging position.

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF JAMES

James’ day began at the crack of dawn, around 4:45 AM. He could hardly ever get a restful sleep due to the constant abuse and noise from his tormentors. The day started with some exercises designed to test his will and push his body to the limits, overseen by some psychos who seemed to take immense pleasure and satisfaction in his pain and discomfort.

After the gruelling physical resistance and regimen, he was forced to cook breakfast around 8:15 AM, expect to mediate conflicts amongst his domestic tormentors and provide strategic inputs to the firm, a task that required an extremely agile mind despite his exhaustion, which was both at the mental and physical level.

Throughout the day, he was available 24/7, handling crises and advising on matters ranging from business deals to the personal issues of his domestic tormentors. He acted as a bodyguard, constantly thwarting threats, providing protection and mentoring recruits brought into this environment.

The physical and mental abuse continued unceasingly. He faced humiliation and personal attacks, not just on himself but his entire family. He was constantly on call, addressing demands for his attention, advice or labour, and that momentary moment of peace that he so desired was also out of his reach.

By evening, James was drained, but he had to cook dinner at home and do any possible mopping up afterwards. This he did for his relaxation and as a way of expressing himself. The night brought no relief or rest as the abuse continued unabated, making sound sleep an unattainable luxury.

The endless cycle of torture and exploitation took a severe toll on James. He came to the sad realisation that he had been used without any prospect of advancement, promotion, position, recognition, or permanent employment in the firm. He was not just an analyst but a fall guy, muse, mediator, and so much more, all for peanuts and no official acknowledgement.

James’ story is a grim reminder of how far people are pushed in the name of employment. It highlights the inhumane treatment, unjust compensation, and blatant disregard for individuals’ contributions in any professional setting.
