JUSTICE PERSONIFIED

 JUSTICE PERSONIFIED

If epitomised as a person, justice would have a commanding yet calm, serene presence, average height, dignified, decent, neat, sharp, clear eyes that reflect the depth of the soul. The eyes can penetrate the surface and see the truth hidden under the contours of layers.  He dresses in spotless and stain-free whites, symbolising purity and impartiality. The trousers are generally of a dark colour: a balance between light and dark. The hair is short-cropped and neatly parted to the side, which shows that he cares for order without vanity. Sometimes, he sports a bespectacled look that gives him a serious persona.

His job is not glamorous but extremely important. Every day, Justice measures the actions of others on an elaborate ancient scale, always striving for fairness and balance. His work is exhausting and demanding, for he must sift through the emotions, lies, evil intentions, dishonesty, hypocrisy, fakeness, deceit, betrayal, and truths of the world, peeling out each layer to find what is just and fair. Yet, Justice never cribs: this is their duty, their calling. And they know that their work does make a difference. Justice listens to a wide range of music, from classical compositions of Ludwig Van Beethoven and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart that soothe the mind to heavy beats, like death metal, punk grunge rock, acid rock, to hip hop and rap with nonsensical verses, all in the hope of understanding the frustration and urgency of those seeking redress. He also listens to soft rock and ballads to understand the pain of the brokenhearted and the angst of the soul. He also listens to jazz, country, and blues music. He especially likes to listen to music with deep philosophical lyrics, which makes you question your very being and purpose on earth.

Justice eludes the deserving, not because it is coldhearted or out of cruelty, but because his path is slow and methodical, consistently doing a thorough job. He does not rush to conclusions or act on wimp and impulse. Justice wants to be sure and to weigh the pros and the cons carefully. But herein lies the tragedy: sometimes, he is too slow, and too much analysis leads to paralysis, and by the time he arrives, the damage is done. This is why people say, “Justice delayed is justice denied.” He knows it, and it haunts him.

When justice visits a person, he leaves an intense mark. It is not always a moment of euphoria or satisfaction; sometimes, it’s a sad realisation that fairness does not align with happiness. For some, Justice brings closure and a sense of balance. For others, it leaves a lingering feeling of loss, of something gone forever, even if the judgement is correct.

In his free time, Justice likes reading the Stoics, philosophy, biography, stories of morality, ancient wisdom, and case studies of law. He enjoys a good debate and spends his evenings in solitude and contemplation. His hobbies include playing chess, a game of strategy and foresight, where every move must be carefully considered. Puzzles of any kind enamour Justice: the more complex, the better. Crossword puzzles are his favourite, which mirror his constant pursuit of truth and order in an often chaotic world. He likes to pen opinions, editorials and articles for various publications. He loves walking, cycling, and that occasional round of golf.

Justice is a wanderer and a nomad and doesn’t stay in a place for long, always moving where needed. He is often found in courthouses, libraries, and areas where people gather to discuss ethics. He likes quiet, reflective spaces that allow him to exercise his grey cells to the maximum without distractions. His favourite beverage is strong black coffee, without any milk or sugar, solid and straightforward, much like his approach to life.

Everyone aspires for speedy justice because they know life’s moments are fleeting. They fear that Justice may elude them in their lifetime and the consequences of waiting too long for wrongs to be righted. Yet, Justice always reminds us that haste can lead to errors, and true fairness requires and demands patience. Justice’s most significant flaw and strength is that he is timeless and exists in his own schedule beyond human urgency. However, he longs to be known and trusted by all who seek him instead of being a distant ideal.

His favourite game? It’s that of an observer. Perhaps it is simply observing life, watching individuals' choices unfold, and waiting for that moment to intervene when his presence is most needed.
