PORTRAIT OF AN ENIGMATIC NEIGHBOUR

 PORTRAIT OF AN ENIGMATIC NEIGHBOUR

There’s something about the man from next door building that doesn’t quite add up, and maybe that’s what makes him so mysterious and intriguing. His apartment is bang opposite mine, and while we have exchanged pleasantries now and then and a little more than a nod here and there, his life plays out like a Jhumpa Lahiri story that I can’t help but piece together.

He doesn’t look like the type who reeks of wealth but drives luxury cars. He is slim, bespectacled, and always dressed in tights—a look that raises eyebrows and causes idle gossip in the neighbourhood. There’s something odd about his fashion choices. Though bold and unapologetic, they make you wonder whether they are a statement of who he is or a part of a complex picture.

But then, there is his wife, who had a different tale a few months ago. Hardly seen, always at home, she’s undergone a massive transformation. These days, she is the epitome of confidence, out and about, standing firmly by his side. They leave together and go on long morning walks, functioning in total sync. She’s mostly seen on a scooter, with confidence and independence that speaks volumes about the new Indian woman of today.

From what I gathered, they originally hail from the eastern part of India and made this city their home. He’s got his own company, and it’s doing well, going by the expensive wheels he drives, parked beneath our apartment, and his upscale lifestyle. Once confined to the four walls of their apartment, his wife seemed to have joined him in his enterprise, not just as his life partner but in business, too. This sudden shift sometimes makes me wonder the story behind their story.

In a way, their whole life is fascinating. On the surface, everything seems hunky dory. Still, there is an element of reinvention of a family breaking shackles and making their own rules, blending into the ordinary while still making their presence felt. It’s curious, almost enchanting; while I may not know his name or exact profession, my neighbour remains a mysterious enigma whose life seems like a Bollywood movie script.
