 A RIGMAROLE OF TWO DEFENDERS: FROM STRANGERS TO TEAMMATES

 

The France Football magazine features two images of entirely unconnected players, but destiny brought them together.

 

2017: We picked up the timeline for the year 2017 when Victor Lindelof arrived at Manchester United from Benefica. He was fascinated with the stories he had heard about the United veteran Jonny Evans, who had recently moved to West Bromwich, Albion. At team meetings, strategy sessions, and conferences, the coaches would go gaga over Evan’s superb defensive and positioning skills.

 

2018-2023: During this period, Lindelof cemented his position as a United defence stalwart while Evans made heads turn with his skills in Leister city. They found themselves face-to-face with opposite teams in the Premier League clashes and developed a mutual admiration and respect for each other’s style of play in their on-field battles.

 

SUMMER OF 2023:  In a move that was somewhat like a bolt from the blue, Erik ten Hag brings Evans back to Old Trafford. At their first training session, Lindelof and Evans warmly greet each other with a smile. Victor remarks that he has been studying Evan the Legend’s moves since his early days there.

 

SEPTEMBER 2023:

 It is a crucial Europa League match, and their first defensive partnership is forged. They blend in seamlessly and display remarkable understanding and team spirit despite never having played together. Their communication is superb, and this secures their team an easy victory. Evans remarks on Victor's ability to make things look easy.

 

DECEMBER 2023:

Their defensive partnership is the go-to option for any injury crisis. They have unique, contrasting styles. While Victor has a composed playing style, Evans has a no-nonsense defending style. Before the start of any match, they study the opposition's games and videos.

 

SUMMER 2024:

After a spectacular performance against Liverpool, the Manchester Evening News proclaimed them “The Unlikely Duo.” Lindelof remarks that Evans has become a mentor and friend and brought immense experience to their partnership.

 

PRESENT DAY:

 

Despite their vast age gap and contrasting backgrounds- one from Sweden and the other from Northern Ireland they have today formed one of the most famed, reliable, defensive partnerships in United’s history. Their story proves that sometimes the most unexpected best relationships are unlikely.
